Getting a visa

We are in the process of getting our Employment Pass (working visa). This is a strange process as it can only be done once you are actually in Singapore, so currently we are on a tourist visa.

To get the Employment Pass you have a meeting at the Ministry of Manpower (nothing to do with Harry Potter or Jaime Durie) where you are fingerprinted and issued with a photo ID card. On top of this they randomly select people to have medical tests - Jared was one of these lucky people.

Yesterday the paperwork arrived for Jared's medical. He needed a HIV test, chest x-ray (for TB) and general check-up. We were anticipating this was going to take up most of our day. We hadn't made an appointment but as communicating on the phone is not always that easy in Singapore (we are not yet fluent in Singlish) we thought we would take our chance and head down to the medical centre.

Stading in front of an office building on Orchard road we were sure we must be in the wrong place, but sure enough on the 8th floor was a medical clinic. After only 20 minutes in the waiting room Jared was in with the doctor and only half an hour later he was done, check-up, blood test, x-ray and all. Talk about service!

Let's hope the Ministry of Manpower are this efficient. We will find out on Saturday.
